Artificial kidney a new hope for kidney patients: Dr Manish Singla

World Kidney Day was celebrated at Mayo Hospital, Sector 69, Mohali (near Chandigarh) on 9th March, 2017. The theme of the programme was obesity. More than 100 kidney patients, kidney donors, their family members and doctors participated in the event. It was emphasized by the speakers that control on weight, high blood pressure and diabetes was necessary to avoid the kidney related diseases.

Another problem in curing the kidney patients was shortage of kidney donors in India. Awareness on organ donation was need of the hour to encourage people to donate kidneys, so that the waiting kidney patients can get some relief. However, the news that artificial kidneys may be a reality in the coming years is a ray of hope. Scientists in USA have got initial success in implating the device on humans. It will be a miracle for the dialysis patients.

Dr Manish Singla, Consultant Nephrologist and Transplant Physician, said, “Obesity can change the microstructure of kidneys, causing protein leakage and gradually leading to the kidney failure."

The menace of kidney related diseases can be avoided by controlling the blood sugar, high blood pressure and obesity. Regular physical activity of at least 30 to 40 minutes in a day and drinking 8 to 10 glasses of water everyday can help the people keeping fit.

A team of doctors participated in the event, including Dr Virendra Dhankar, Dr Rajesh Gulia, Dr Manoj Sharma, Dr Karun Singla, Dr Vikrant and Dr Deepak Tyagi. Kidney donors were falicitated and given gifts and certificates.

Dr Singla, the only kidney specialist in Tricity holding a fellowship degree from Clinical Nephrology University of Toronto, Canada, further said, “There are thousands of patients on dialysis awaiting kidney transplant.  Now there is a ray of hope in the form of artificial kidney for such patients.”
